Cucumis sativus

Varieties Offered:

Marketmore—dependable slicer for all purposes, delicious, crunchy, and sweet.

Homemade Pickles--(2nd photo) tons of kirbies for fresh eating, salads, and of course, pickles!  Our favorite.

Mexican Gherkin (Melothria scabra)--(3rd, 4th, 5th photos) We love these mini-watermelon look-alikes!  Crunchy, slightly tangy, 1" fruits on prolific, small-leafed vines.  Slice them, pickle them, use them in stir fries, salsas, or cocktails!  Best when picked at the “slim olive” stage with immature seeds, rather than at the plump watermelon stage with large seeds. Generally resistant to traditional cucumber diseases.

Because we don't usually purchase vegetables out of season, the first cucumber salad of the summer is an event.  After slicing (I never peel), I dress them simply with salt and fresh dill.  Cucumbers definitely produce more and better quality fruit when they have something to climb on, but they often need assistance.  We grow our cukes on trellises and I help the vines climb up, rather than across or let hang.  When necessary, I pull the sturdy leaves through the wire and gently untwist and re-twist the curly tendrils as needed.  3" peat pots.
