At the end of this very full day, participants will know how to harvest, dry, process, and store their home-grown herbs, make them into herbal “simples” such as tinctures and oils, and use the simples to formulate herbal remedies such as teas, syrups, salves, and more! This class is perfect for anyone ready to get going with herbs and wanting to jump-start his or her own home apothecary. *Herbal Basics is also offered as a three week series.

This full day intensive is beginner friendly and includes materials. Please dress for a full day outside in the garden (at tables with umbrellas). We will take breaks and walks as needed. Please bring water and lunch.  Registration by 6/21/21 preferred (last-minute attendees are welcome if spaces are available and class has at least four signed up by 6/21).  For more info and to register, please visit: https://www.herrickslanefarm.com/workshops-2021/herbal-basics-1-2-3-full-day-class

Herbal Basics 1:
Got herbs growing but not sure what to do with them?  Thinking about growing an herb garden, but would like to know what’s involved?  Join north fork herbalist April Alexander and “farmden”er Nicole Orens-Williams for Part 1 of this three-week series.  This week they will start at the beginning and review best practices for harvesting, drying, and storing your herbal bounty. Topics covered include: how and when to harvest different parts of herbs (such as leaves, flowers, and roots); using fresh herbs vs. dried herbs; the pros and cons of various types of drying; processing and long term storage.

Weather permitting, we will forage in the medicinal herb garden for volunteer herbs to practice our skills.  While we always engage in lively discussions on the uses of herbs, this class will primarily focus on the hands-on side of herbalism.

Herbal Basics 2:
Got herbs growing but not sure what to do with them?  Thinking about making your own remedies, but need to get started?  Join north fork herbalist April Alexander and “farmden”er Nicole Orens-Williams for Part 2 of this three-week series.  This week they will cover “simples” from top to bottom--reviewing best practices for preserving herbs through simple infusions and tinctures. Topics covered will include: infused oils, tinctures, glycerites, herbal vinegars, and herbal honeys.

Weather permitting, we will forage in the medicinal herb garden for volunteer herbs to practice our skills.  Participants will make and take an infused oil, a tincture, a glycerite, a vinegar, and a honey.  Jump start your home apothecary with these effective and easy techniques which are the building blocks for other simple remedies.

Herbal Basics 3:
Made some tinctures or oils and not sure how to use them?  Ready for the next step in using herbs to treat illness and improve the health of your family?  If you are interested in building a home apothecary or first-aid kit, this workshop is for you!  Join north fork herbalist April Alexander and “farmden”er Nicole Orens-Williams for Part 3 of this three-week series.  This week they will cover making simple remedies from dried and fresh herbs, extracts, and infusions.  Topics and remedies covered will include: herbal teas and bath teas, poultices, syrups, salves, pills, tonics, switchels, and more!

Learn to combine and use your simple remedies effectively to treat illness and support good health.  Participants will make-and-take a handful of useful remedies—a first-aid salve, an herbal tonic, and an herb and mineral bath soak.
